Close to Home

Some winter days are spent on the mountain. Others fit into the hour before dinner, a lunch break or a free afternoon close to home. There’s room for those days, too.

A familiar walk can feel different in winter. Without the leaves, you notice a house you’ve passed a hundred times. A fresh snowfall covers the park benches. You take the same turn as always and stop to look at something you usually walk past.

It doesn’t take much planning. Pull on your layers and choose a route that suits the day. Walk to get a coffee instead of driving, take a lap around the neighborhood or ask a friend to meet you outside. You can keep it short and still be glad you went.

These outings have their own small routines. The gloves left by the door. A neckie borrowed by someone who forgot theirs. The debate over whether to take the longer way back. Eventually, a quick walk becomes something you look forward to.

There will be weekends for early starts and a car full of gear. In between, winter is happening right outside the door. You don’t have to save your favorite layers for a ski trip.

Take them around the block.
