The first ski day of the season starts with finding everything you put away in the spring. One glove is in a jacket pocket. Your goggles are in a different bag. There may still be a trail map from last winter folded up with your pass.
Give yourself an evening to get it all together. Lay out your layers, find both gloves and put your helmet and goggles with your boots. Pack your neckie somewhere you can reach it without emptying the whole bag in the parking lot. It’s a small job that makes an early morning easier.
Make a plan with the people you’re going with, too. Pick a departure time and a place to meet if you split up. Bring something for lunch or decide where you’ll stop. These are easy things to forget when everyone is busy checking the forecast.
Leave a little room in the day to get settled. The first morning back comes with buckles to adjust, pockets to search and friends to catch up with. There’s no need to fit a whole winter into one day.
Afterward, empty your bag and hang up your damp layers. Put the small things back where you’ll find them next time. By the second trip, the routine starts to feel familiar again.
For now, getting everything by the door is a good place to start.
